Water touches everything, yet many still take it for granted. Water is needed for life, for drinking & sanitation, for agriculture & industry, and for fun on hot summer days. Goal No. 6 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals relates to securing access to water and sanitation for all: “Access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene is the most basic human need for health and well-being. Billions of people will lack access to these basic services in 2030 unless progress quadruples. Demand for water is rising owing to rapid population growth, urbanization and increasing water needs from agriculture, industry, and energy sectors.” Over 2.3 billion people live in water scarce areas. Many, in rich and poor countries alike, lack access to clean, safe potable water. Water also plays a crucial role in climate change. We need to learn to use less water to do more for human needs, while taking less from nature. There is much to learn and much to do. Great problems create great opportunities where young people may find a calling on which to build meaningful careers. Some involve small steps, well by well in remote villages, and others have a larger scope providing water to many. On this panel we examine some of the initiatives and innovation that are helping tackle the challenges we face around water, and where opportunities exist for young people to follow up on. But they share a common goal: making life better. Let’s dive in and learn about it!
